... a wonderful specimen, Ed. I always liked hornbeam, it's true that after my collection capabilities are more familiar with the europeans. Congratulations to the hornbeam, and thanks for sharing this wonder with us.

Is there a slight unusual leaf curl going on here. Maybe I am imagining it because I recently got through a season of Fungus attack in Australia and this curve/cup in the leaf was a tell tale sign in hornbeam.

I really liked this tree but, Im thinking about the base there. How does it look from the sides?
To me, with the opening under the tree, I felt it would be weird that if its a big old tree in nature, it would fall over, or crack the root to the left.
Have you considered filling it up?

, there are plenty of trees in nature with big holes in the base of the trunk.

I really like this Ed. I like the feature at the base but I think it would look better if you dropped it slightly in the pot. It would look like a massive old hollowed tree.

now you say Will about dropping it down I have only just seen that there is no back to the hollow . I thought the hollw was only at the front and that the trunk at the back went down to the soil. I agree it would look better lowered a bit.

Maybe the next time I re-potted this tree,I will look if it is better to plant it deeper or not.
I will show you if I done this next year or so

I missed this one when it was posted!! you have a very nice tree..such a massive trunk..hornbeams next to elms are my favorite trees.. i think i to would plant a little lower also but it is great like it is......very good take care john
