I thought it less redundant to revive a dead thread than create a new one:

How many applications of lime sulphur do people typically use to get their trees stark white (which is the effect I'm going for right now)? I'm working on a 60 year old juniper jin and 2 applications of undiluted lime sulphur (2 weeks apart) has still not done the trick. What's your experience?

If you really want a stark white finish to your deadwood, a watered down white emulsion paint over the Lime Sulphur will do the trick. Personally I don't like white deadwood as it is never a true reflection of the silvery grey seen in the wild. Having said that, it gives a good contrast to the bark on bonsai. Very Happy

Hi Will,

Thank you for responding and congratulations on your new blog. I have not gone the "stark white" route on any of my other trees, however, I think it would look really nice on this juniper. What do you mean by white emulsion paint? Do you mean create an emulsion of water and paint or the paint you purchase is already an emulsion? Also: (1) how much water would you use to dilute the paint and (2) if it is "emulsion paint" when I look it up on the internet, it leads to all UK websites. It doesn't appear to be a common U.S. term for paint. Any suggestions on what to buy?

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks Mike. By emulsion I mean white interior house paint. Neat, it is quite thick and will cover any fine detail. Start very thin, adding small amounts of paint to water until you are happy with the effect.
