For Jesse - Fukien Tea
Jesse, here are the progression shots of two trees.
Extensions on branches were up to 1 yard [ 1 m] no real change of size in the trunk.
Please note I deliberately defoliated the second tree, because I found there were too many spotty leaves and in an earlier article in Bonsai Questions, someone said they had successfully defoliated a Fukien Tea. My first time doing so.

The first Christmas gift - maybe 98
2nd image possibly 2000
As it is today - repotted and resting before any new work
Second tree - birthday gift 99
Today and defoliated

Re: For Jesse - Fukien Tea
Thank you for posting this. Both are great looking trees. I absolutely love the first tree. That is a beautiful tree. I guess I love how contorted the tree and the branches are while still being so natural. I love the ramification on this as well. That is one of the key elements I'm finding with most of the trees I love.
I can't way to see what you do with it. Do you plan to do a lot? I'm guessing thinning out the crown and overall canopy, etc. I'm curious what else, if anything, you will do with it.

Jun, eh ? you have me confused, do fukien teas normally not ramify ?
I didn't see any in the flesh when I was abroad, save for the one little one I bought at a nursery in London area, and that was very small.
Jessie,
what normally happens with me, and the why of the over deep pot, is the fukien teas develop tons of leaves. By December, when the rains normally slow, I will miss a day and get a partial dry out. Within a few days a good % of the leaves fall. Sometimes they fill back in, but no shoots.
After repotting in January, it takes about 1 month [ February] for the tree to show signs of consuming the soil and by March end, the tree has mastered the pot. By April, I can re-prune for shape and then the rest of the year the tree just keeps getting denser and denser with leaf until I have to cut spaces back in.
The design runs on exterior shape and negative spaces [ the holes.]
Tomorrow I will post the designs.
Later.

* These trees consume nitrogen in a weak lawn fertiliser until the rains fall - May to June, and then from September a normal osmocote type fertiliser.
The second tree [ defoliated one ] never develops seed.

The first tree and second are very nice!!
The second tree i think that you could cut, on the main first branch on the right, the branch that is in the same line of the trunck.
Regards, Miguel

Very nice trees indeed.
I really wish I could get this progress with my fukiens. I have a few, and they keep struggling every day. I think one of them are going out as we speak.
