Here is a video of repotting a huge carpinus orientalis nicknamed "octopus". The tree was very heavy...some 40 kg of wood, substrate, stones...so we used a power puller to lift the tree from the temporary pot and to fit it in a new bonsai pot.
I am very happy with the final result. I will post new photos when tree comes to full leaf

Here is the video: http://sandevbonsai.blogspot.com/2011/04/video-sandevbonsai-octopus-carpinus.html

good vid Sebastian. done a scrappy vert of the tree if some branching/trunk was removed. I know some will think iam trying to make your hornbeam look like a typical bonsai (left branch, right branch, back branch if you get my meaning) rather than a naturalistic broom style but even with great ramification in a number of years I still think that right branch/trunk looks too heavy in the direction it's going. IMHO I'd reduce it back as verted and then start growing a natural looking tree. Would certainly reduce that 40kg a bit Smile

i would go for the tree's how it is now, reducing the tree like the virt is in my opinion a lost.
not that it would be a poor tree, but it's pretty rear in it,s shape now.

but like i said, that's my thought's Very Happy

I agree with Eric. A reduction like Marko suggests would end up with a lot of deadwood where the roots feed nothing.

Marko, thanks for the effort but...I would never do something like you did on your virt....I like trees natural as they are. Together with that, If somebody wants a tree with one trunk, than you don't look in nature for triple trunk tree, because, it is too much destruction and scaring the tree. I think, if nature already sculpted this tree during many years and it looks fine, there is not much I can do to make it better Smile This is just perfect. And I have also one problem...in recent years, I do not find classical shapes and trees very interesting, I just look for something wild, spontaneous, dramatic, unusual...
That is just my way
Anyway, thanks for the virt Smile

Same for me as I leave it, especially cutting anything that would be a pity, really a beautiful tree.
Thank you Sandev

Another excellent video, Sebastijan. Your English is very good and you give an interesting commentary to your work.
I'm still amazed that such big and ancient trees survive the drastic root pruning you give them on collection!

You are very lucky to have such beautiful yamadori in your country. I'm jealous!

My English...oh.....I'm trying Sad

Well, almost ALL Carpinus survive (98%), but that is not the case with other species, for example Mugho!
Thanks for your kind words regarding my work Smile
