RE: Scots pine with ~2.5" base in 2004. Six years after planting, I pulled the tree from the ground. This past weekend, I repotted it from a 22" nursery container at a potting workshop. It was leaning too far in the nursery pot to observe roots on its backside. I needed help to re-pot because of its size & my lack of size.

Luckily, there was a potting workshop scheduled at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum. I am considering the backside, now (2nd photo, below), as a possible front.

If Russel Coker is lurking, perhaps he can help me identify the pot which I had in storage but feared would swallow the plant, even as a transitional option...

Good stuff.

That trunk seems wider than 2.5 inches?

Seven years out, the trunk base is now 6" while the root spread is
slightly over 10".

Chris, it's by Yamakou. Hows about a picture of the whole tree and that pot?

Great trunk you got there. Are you sure its a Scots Pine? Those needles and buds don't look like it to me.

Chris, just ignore him; you knew I meant your shirt, didn't you? Anyway, whole tree and pot pics would be great - before and after the repot would be ideal.

Hi Russell... Sorry for my absence. Thanks for the pot ID of Yamakou. Next time I'll look at bonsaiplaza.com as well as roaming bonsai-bachi catalogues!

On a cool day, that flannel shirt got a bit warm once work began... :-)

I did visit since last posting but did not, and still do not, have access to a good view of the bonsai front & its pot. It is tucked behind a shrub at Susan's house. I can show you the backside of both without enlisting help, however, & that should help fill your imagination. I also have an old photo from 2006 (2nd year in the ground) & an illustrated bud for assessing its heritage (Will?).

Backside with apex falling away-- including 24 X 6.5" transitional pot (somewhat distorted by close range), today:

Scots pine? Out of my comfort zone for sure, but I would have guessed P. nigra.

Been al long time with this thread. The white needle sheaths and the length of the needles look far too long for Sylvestris.
