If you've ever tried to chainsaw a round off a tree to use as a display stand, it doesn't take long to learn the bark soon separates. So it was natural for my stand maker to figure out how to duplicate the look without the drop out
frustration. No the best photos but I think you can get the idea any way Very Happy

when i first registered here i had a problem posting and asked for help. Even offering to pay for long distance here in the states to have someone talk me thru it on the phone. I got no assist. So I spent a half hr or so this time and re-read everything and thought I'd try again...no luck, so i kinda feel like just forgetting it. It's not a tease, just a frustration that I can't figure it out and no assists or interest to help.

I post on three koi chat lines with nary a problem posting pictures.....

Dick

I have unlimited long distance on all my phones.

Our biggest problem in the time difference, but if you want me to call you from here early in the AM, be close to noon your time. Let me know. We can exchange numbers through the Private e mail feature on the forum.

My apologies Dick, I wasn't aware you were having trouble.
I struggled to post pictures on my first couple of attempts but managed to get there in the end.
Hopefully Billy will be able to talk you through it.

Regards

John

Dick, its a valiant attempt but the main problem in replicating a log-cut cross section stand is the grain. Cutting across a log reveals the rings. Here you have flat sawn board glued together. The grain is totally different. In the photo along the vertical sides I can see the glue lines, which sort of ruins the effect. Nonetheless, the stand could work. I'd suggest using a wide board, carving even a rougher texture into the sides, (especially important if you have to mate two or three boards and there are glue lines. Carving could help disguise them) and then using a much darker stain on the side. You might want to ask your stand maker to investigate getting a piece of a burl - the grain is so irregular in that they work in pretty much any orientation or a rosewood that doesn’t have such prominent grain.
