Wonderful tree Ed and such a choice of experts to work this little gem! Does this species need any special treatment in our wetter, colder, climate?

I am glad that you all like this tree already in this shape cheers
I can't wait to work on it,but I will force my self to wait{I am Ed and i am bonsai-addicted} lol!
And Will I treat this bonsai the same as my other bonsai's,only in a real hot summer the tree must have more Bonsai Fertiliser for the growth.
Than it gets every week fertiliser, and in the winter I put the tree in a room where the temperature is always above 5 degrees ThumbsUp
When you want tiny leaves on it,you must be brave and prune it like a acer in may or June.

I put it outdoors in full sun for the summer, & like Ed, I usually feed weekly. You have to be careful not to overwater. It needs to dry out in between. I try to give it a cool-down rest in the fall. It is supposed to be semi-dormant for about a month. Then I put it under lights. It grows very slowly during the winter, but during the summer you have to watch it & trim frequently. In July, new twigs need to be wired. You can't wire old branches. It will tolerate light frost, but it will ruin the leaves & you would have to grow a new set. You can see mine, such as it is, in the thread Bonsai Goes to Church.

Very nice tree, love the base and trunk movement. The middle part of the trunk was more apparent in the earlier photos, seems you've let some foliage grow in front of it...is that part of the final design or just temporary?

Thank you Nik,for your reply Very Happy
And Chris, this tree is stil in training and this is not the endresult.
I want more foliage in the top,and on the back off the tree and than it will be more in balance.
So I have much to improve in the coming years.

Very nice Ed.
I love the bark of this specie. One comment or question though if you won't mind. Do you need that apex? I think without it, a more balanced tree would appear by just reducing the volume of branchlets and removing the apex being built. More compact tree and much simple. Anyway, it's just my observation because the apex is moving too far away from the trunk and growing it further to reach near the center of the image would create a very predictable and un natural S- form in the future. The first and second photo dated feb 01,2010 is a more balanced tree, with less a bit of the apex.

regards,
jun Smile

Hi Jun,yes I have consider to take away the top.
But this is a tough decision to make, and yes the tree will become more compact if I do this.
And I decided to work out the top how it is and make it fuller, and the S-shape will be disguised with the upcoming branches with leafs.
This is a personal taste, I like it when the top of the tree leans a bit forward to the viewer almost if it bows for you Very Happy
In real life the tree looks much better than on the photo, but we all know that of course.
Thank you Jun for thinking with me how to improve this tree,I really appreciate this ThumbsUp

Olea europea Empty My old olive in his new pot

Post  Ed van der Reek Fri Feb 17, 2012 3:53 pm

My old olive in his pot that I bought at Lodder more than a year ago.
I don't know if I keep it in this one,I had an other one only this handmade rectangle bonsaipot was not the good size.
If I can get the same pot only a bit bigger,it will be repotted in the rectangle one some time.

Olea europea Empty a pot for a olivea europea

Post  abcd Fri Feb 17, 2012 4:40 pm

sorry, but i'ts my resentment : i prefer the fist pot.
For me, this pot is for literati style, not for a tree in moyogi style, the trunk is too massive.
A vitual photographie with the first pot too small
