Growing with Florescent lights.

Post  NemusStipes on Sun Mar 13, 2011 11:36 pm

I used the search bar and was shocked to find that there had not seemed to be a question posed on this. Shocked

I've been looking into growing bonsai with florescent lighting. It seems like a pretty interesting idea. I have a closet in my room that I am preparing to set up with florescent lighting. I have been reading the articles that came up when I googled "Florescent Bonsai Growing" and I want to try it. Does anyone here do it? What are the pros? What are the cons?

I use it and it is great. I use one cool bulb and one warm bulb with a reflector that I have set up on top of a fish tank. Helps my trees grow throughout the year. I can't think of any cons though:

Growing under Fluorescent Lights

Post  bonsaisr on Mon Mar 14, 2011 1:54 am

First of all, remember that fluorescent lights are kosher; they have a UO.
If you can locate the 2007 & 2008 issues of International Bonsai magazine, I wrote a series of articles on fluorescent light culture. If you look for Jack Wikle on the Internet, he is an expert on growing under lights, although his methods & mine differ.
If you decide to set up fluorescent lights in a closet, you will have to take the ballasts out of the lamps and install them in the next room, otherwise you will have too much heat. Also, if there is a room under the closet, you will have a problem with spilled water. If you live in a house, your best bet is to enclose an area of the basement to make a plant room.
I put all my tropicals outdoors for the summer.
