Hi everyone,
First of all, I'm new here, but not new to bonsai. I've been creating bonsais on and off for over 30 years. Unfortunately, it's been a few years since I've made one as I've had limited space. If I've made any, It was for friends. Usually they were small trees, never more than a foot or so tall... But this one is definitely going to be my biggest project and I could certainly use some help! This one I think I'll keep Smile

At work, they did some landscaping and pulled out about 50 old Boxwood bushes that formed a long hedge.

I grabbed one... out of the dumpster, that looked interesting. I would have LOVED to have taken all of them! Believe me!

Right now it's in a large pot until I know it's recovered from it's "Hacking" out of the ground.
It was apparently squared and had another bush that was against it... so it's got some large bare patches.
I know I need to cut it down... But I hate to lose some of those amazing, twisted smaller branches at the top... I wish I had the room to root some of them to make smaller Bonsais with.

Anyway... If anyone would like to help... Please copy pics and draw lines where you'd cut and if you want to give an explanation.
I'm not sure if I should leave the three plants together or separate them.
should I cut them way back and just let them back bud a new crown or wait a while for some new growth?
I LOVE the trunk on the center plant... with the hollowed out knot holes!

Anyway... here's some pics from different angles. It's probably about 2 feet tall and wide.

I have more pics that I will post in the next post, since I'm limited to just four... hope that's ok.. and can take more.

Please... Comments and Suggestions!
and if they're too big... sorry... I'll go back in and edit the post to correct if necessary.... if I can
TIA

you should repost this on the "Bonsai" forum you might get more response, they may move it but I dont know. If it were mine, and im nobodys master, I would seperate them only if you have time and space for each one. I like the way the tree has developed natual ramifications and taper, too bad it looks nothing like a bonsai Very Happy . Good luck its reall nice.

Hi! Paul!

Nice catch, is it one tree...
Could you post a picture of the cleared neabari?
I would set branches short and start all over.
Wil take some time,...but wil give best results

in my opinion,...

Thanks guys...

As for separating them... I'm thinking they may look better... One is very tall and fairly straight... may make a nice literati style.
I also really like the fork and knot holes in the center one. I think it would make a really nice tree on it's own.
I resized one of the pictures and drew a sweeping line over the top of where I may just cut two of the plants... leaving the right taller tree.
Too low? I figure if I want to go lower, it will be easier to see where to cut once the top is gone. but I can't see the "trees through the forest"... so to speak. I just keep looking at the upper branches as new smaller trees and really want to just cut and root some. I'm going to just have to bite the bullet though.

I'll post pics once I do it.
I'll also repost this under Bonsai.
Thanks
