cleaning up a juniper tanuki

Post  kauaibonsai on Tue Mar 08, 2011 7:10 am

spent part of the last 2 days working on a large procumbens nana tanuki. the deadwood is vitex rotundifolia, a very hard and durable wood which resists decay. weeds have taken over the pot and the branches and foliage have grown every which way, leaving the tree looking disorganized and ragged. the deadwood has dried out, needing to be treated and rehydrated . some branches were removed. new wire was applied sparingly. the bulk of the work was pinching to reestablish the image of a venerable old tree. the pot needs to be cleaned and new soil added to replace what was removed with the weeds.

after weeding, pinching, some wire and trunk rehydration, this big boy is beginning to look like its old self
