Premna re-styling Empty Premna re-styling

Post  Robert Steven Sat Mar 05, 2011 3:48 am

I got this pre-bonsai from a local nursery. The character is very strong, but it was not styled to expose the character...so the re-styling is taking place....

Don't be supprised with the leaves size on the simulated picture..Premna's leaves can be reduced significantly from the original size of 8 CM to 2 MM !!!

Premna re-styling Empty Re: Premna re-styling

Post  Rob Addonizio Sat Mar 05, 2011 12:35 pm

Hello Robert, good to have you back,

I like what you have done with this design. Lots of direction and movement. Although I can't do a virtual, I would love to see this guy on a slab, to help frame the area above the soil and further its sense of weight and direction. To me, this tree has great negative space and the pot that is it in brings the eye down too far.

What do you think?

Thanks for letting me share,
Rob Very Happy

You might be right Rob, with a natural slab it will fit perfectly to the character...

Yes, Slighly crescent natural pot as well, but then the deadwood on the right side should be taken off, otherwise, I am afraid the visual balance will not be that good...thanks CJ.

Premna re-styling Empty Premna Obtusifolia Soil Composition

Post  bonsaiment Sun Apr 28, 2013 5:48 am

Hi Robert,

Sorry to bring up an old thread, may I know what is your soil composition for your premna Obtusifolia? Is it purely 100% volcanic soil? I'm due to repot my premna and have on hand volcanic soil and volcanic sand (larger pieces). I'm thinking if I should be mixing burned earth and pumice on the mix.

Thanks!
Vin
