Can anyone help with these silks?

Post  Guest on Thu Mar 03, 2011 1:27 pm

A friend of mine is getting rid of some stuff and she mentioned 2 Japanese silk pictures. She wants to sell them but has no idea of their worth, if indeed they are of any value. She told me her Grandfather bought them in Japan and thats as much as she knows. They apear to be silk(some of it painted) and one seems to have real hair. Any idea of their age?

It is fully moderated, so responses tnd to be a bit slower than here, but lots of folks there know a lot about stuff like this.

Will,

The two individuals are Chinese officials, by their facial features and attire.

I agree, they are not Japanese, but Chinese. Is that real hair?

Don't ask Will, he has no experience of real hair.

My guess is that, yes, it is real hair.

And knowing Asian symbolism, the hair is from a relative or firend/teacher? who was held in high regard and would be immortalized this way. Possibly even someone close who had some official position.

Then I guess Will and I will be quickly forgotten.

Whatever their value, the more I look at them the more I like them. They have a naiive quality that suggests they were 'homemade' in the best arts & crafts tradition.
I wonder if their style of dress, or what they are carrying. would help ascertain who/what they are, and maybe give some indication of age?

The guy on the left looks like he's carrying a sword on his back, wrapped in a cloth as was often the case. He also looks like he's wearing some kind of sporran, so perhaps he was one of the Tokyo McSuzuki's?
The one on the right looks like he's got a pair of salt and pepper pots in his hands, so I reckon he could be a waiter in Japan's first Italian Sushi Bar, Tony Pastushi's. He also looks like he's sporting one of those 'hilarious' joke arrows that the office wag wears at parties.

Badda bing!
