Hi Alex,
Nice Junipe but but why you do not let the hanging branch hang.
I would let all the braches grow up.
That would make the tree compact and attractive.
Maybe you can try that.
I think that you go repot this tree also.If so repot it in a smaller pot.

Rakesh

Hi Rakesh firstley re- hanging branch,it would have been impossible to bend
the branch any further without snapping it No it was on the limit even
with the raffia and tape, hence the reason I left the four or five thinner
branches at the top third to further develop and is only the first styling,
regarding the pot ,this is a Mica pot used strictly for training purposes,
as I said it is garden centre stock and was in a flower pot. flower

Hi Alex

IMO I think you should have used the second picture as your front, just judging from the 2D image. It looks like a difficult piece of material, one thing I notice is the way everything points in different directions, and the long straight piece at the top of the tree. However, I like the way you have arranged the foliage. Perhaps if you're feeling adventurous you could grow that cascading branch longer, taking it below the rim of the pot. But from a perspective of balancing the image, you could probably reduce the jins as indicated by the blue lines and bring the apex over a bit to the right in the future.

just an idea

Cheers

Alex another idea of me is to cut of the hanging branch.
Let on branch in the top grow longer to the right. This is going to balance the tree more.
And Cheers is right also the upper peace is to straight.
If you take the second picture as the front then you can cover the straight piece and you can try to bend the hanging bracnh to the front.
I think that it is the best option.
As Cheers aid we are looking at a 2d.
Think of all the options and make the best decision.

Sometimes it is amazing how plant names get mangled in the game of Telephone, especially being bounced across the ocean. What you have is a Parsons juniper (from Parsons nursery), sometimes incorrectly called Parsonii. The correct name is Juniperus davurica 'Expansa.' The species is Asian, but the cultivar is American.
Good luck with it. I hope having the proper label will enable you to style it even more beautifully. Razz Very Happy

Thanks for that Iris, it was a cultivar I had never heard of before which made it even more interesting
even the nursery spelt it wrong, I will of course update the progress.

If Alex bought it in the UK it is more likely to have been sold as J.chinensis "Parsonii". Websites indicate they are one and the same thing with chinensis being the prefered name - over here at least.

You've got a nice shape into the foliage, Alex, and that from a tricky bit of material to start with.

If it had been mine, (only MHO of course) I may have worked with the foliage closer to the hairpin. But that is based on 2-D photos which as we know can be misleading. Would like to see how this one develops over the next couple of years.

Hi Fi, your right the 2d photo does nothing for it, it was a tricky piece but I
do like material others may disregard, of course I will keep you up to date of
its progression.

Uh oh. It seems that tree names change as fast as orchid names these days. This just in from the Internet:
<<Juniperus chinensis 'Parsonii' - Formerly Juniperus davurica 'Expansa'..>>

Hah hah. But Iris, it takes a brave (and wise) woman to admit on an Internet forum in view of the entire world that she has made a perfect ass of herself on an Internet forum in view of the entire world.

Iris, I don't think anyone will hold it against you, although it will be noted in your permanent record Very Happy
Heck, I seem to do it on a regular basis these days!

Alex, I like your juniper, but I do find that long jin branch on the lower right to be really distracting.
