Hello.. I'm new here.. and I'm From INDIA.
I'm not good in gardening, all I know about gardening is that dig a hole, plant a seed, water it every day, wait for Plant to grow for years!! Shocked
I'm not even familiar with the name of all trees in English Mad . GOD help me.. Rolling Eyes
Anyways I saw this bonsai tree.. (no no a miniature tree, I didn't knew that these were called bonsai, that time!! Smile )
.. a 4 feet Japanese bonsai red leaf tree on net (I still don't know its name Embarassed ).. just made so crazy to have it. Googled all about it..
found out whatever I could.. even found a site selling bonsai.. but I don't wan't it that way.
I want to grow one myself (it would be a asset for me Cool ) !!
about 15 minutes later found out about the CLUB.. and joined it immediately!!

so here I am posting my very 1st Post. I needed to start from scratch
and I really hope all the senior members can teach me... so what should I do 1st?

which tree for starting? winters are about to start & will be here till march.
temperature is 24 Celsius & will go down to 4 or 5!!
should I aim for small ones for starting? or the bigger ones?
which container? which soil ?(I'm in north India, & soil is dirty that's all I know about soil Very Happy )

I guess these are the thing to consider before start..?? right?

Hi Nikhil and welcome to the forum. We all hope you will enjoy your new hobby and we will try to do what we can to help.

A good first step would be to see if there is a bonsai club near you that you could go along to even if it's only for a few visits. You would be able to ask the people there what would be the best trees to grow in your own area and how to get started. That's probably the most important thing to consider just now as it is a great idea to start with trees that you know will cope with your own climate. I can't even begin to advise you as my climate is completely different. If there isn't a club, just start paying a lot of attention to the trees you see growing naturally in your area - in gardens, parks etc.

Once you have worked out what can cope with your climate, then read read read about them or ask people.

We have a few members on the forum from India so hopefully some of them will help out here. But always remember that climates can be quite different in different parts of even as small a country as my own. I should imagine India has significant climate differences from location to location.

But anyway, the very best of luck. We've all been where you are just now and have found the bonsai journey very enjoyable.

welcome! I think there is basically two things that bring us to bonsai. First we are atracted to the beauty and style of the trees from an artistic view point and then we discover that more importantly is to learn horticulture so that the trees are given what they need to be healthy. my encouragement ( like Fiona's) would be to have you find a mentor that good teach you the basics to get you started right. Glad to hear you were able to find a club.

I thought he meant IBC when he talked about finding the club. Even better if he has already found some real people to consult as opposed to us virtual ones.

Nikhil, another thing you can do is use the PM (Private Message) function on here and contact some of the other members based in India. Go to the Search facility at the top of the page and search on "India" and phrases with India in it and you're sure to call up something that Indian members have posted or commented on. Then just open the threads and click on PM below the member's name to send a message.

PS Whatever you do, don't use the word "bonsai" in the search or you get literally thousands of posts appearing.
