is something feasting on my tree? Empty is something feasting on my tree?

i have just noticed what looks like fine sawdust or maybe insect droppings coming from under a raffia and taped branch, it's going to be a lot of work to take off the wire, raffia, tape then re-do everything so i was wondering if anyone had any ideas? it's too dark to get a picture now but i prob can tomorrow.
the whole tree is also riddled with those little dark red pin head type insects, i've always noticed them on trees over the years and they don't seem to do any damage, but i've not seen them in such quantity before, i don't think its them under the wrap i mentioned earlier, then i can't be too sure.
do you think i should try and carefully cut the tape and raffia from under the wire to have a better look or introduce some sort of insecticide or water/lime sulpher mix spray?

Hello J.R. What kind of tree is it and can you recall any deadwood areas under the raffia? You shouldn't need raffia again on the branch, just wire.
Those little brownish red shiny round bugs are harmlesss in my opinion. I have them on my trees too.

hi will, thanks for the quick reply. it's a scots pine and the branch in question will be a pig to get to for dewiring/rewiring bit i'd rather do that than lose it all together! don't remember any deadwood under there but it did get a good bending, i took it realy slow but you never know if you split it with a wrap. good reason to not wrap i spose.

How long has the raffia been on the tree and is it a single wire at the sawdust area? If it is, you could just cut out a small section of wire and see. You then replace the wire in that area and as long as the wire goes around the branch a couple of turns either side of the cut wire, it should have the same holding power.

raffias been on since august, the dust is coming out the end at the trunk, it's a good size branch with 4mm wire on and under tension. probably enough room to cut the wrap awayto see underneath, i'll give it a go tomorrow if i get back from work in good time.
do you know of any creatures that eat pines?

Not live wood I don't. Only deadwood. If it turns out to be beetle grubs, then squirt some pesticide in the holes. That should sort your problem out immediately.
