Hello there. This Juni looks very unhealthy to me. I wouldnt work it until its health is restored.

I'm sure Will is correct about the health of the juniper. It's hard to tell from the images, but it looks like too much sun and not enough water and fertilizer.
If it was mine, I would start an aggressive feeding program. At the same time I would slowly trim it back to encourage new growth. In about a year or 2, I would expect to have a lush and green shohin size bonsai.

Good luck

Yes Will, i have one and the foliage lookes nothing like that one. Mine is more needle like and not rope like foliage. Is this one of the reasons you think this tree is unhealthy?

Possibly a raft after you get the tree healthy again.

Hello Neil. It's more to do with the washed out colour of the foliage. San Jose should be as green as Chinensis once healthy. You talk of yours having needle like foliage. This is the juvenile and faster growth. Once they settle down, you get the "rope", or scale foliage.

It IS winter. They tend to look a bit less green this time of year.

Winter or not, this is not a healthy colour. There is a small branch with reasonable colour...The rest is sick.

The third picture is interesting... a Windswept seems to be a good option. However styling could come in once the tree is in full vigour like Will has suggested. First things first... repot the tree into a growth pot and leave it to recover for atleast a year , feeding it regularly and then attempt first styling.

All the best

Check for spider mites, place a white piece of paper under the yellow branches, tap branches, if small dots appear on the paper and move about you have spider mites. spray the foliage with the stngest blast of water you can, do this daily for about two weeks.

That juniper looks like one of mine if I forget to repot it for too many years. I think the real problem is that juniper has leached all the nutrients out of the soil. If it has been in that pot for more than two years, then a repotting into good soil and some fertilizer should solve the problem. It may also have spider mites, as they tend to attack trees that have been weakened by other causes.
