Soil being thrown out of pot Empty Soil being thrown out of pot

Post  kingfisher Fri Jan 09, 2015 9:33 am

I am newbie here,Bought a small bonsai (buddist Pine) from a 'bonsai outlet' about 5 weeks ago and have been watering daily as I keep it inside.
It has some moss and small ragwort on the surface of the soil.
After the first few days I started to notice small piles of 'soil' around the pot on the window sill.
I cleaned it up,then a few days later I noticed the same small pile of soil on the window sill.
On closer inspection there was a small area near the corner of the pot where it seemed the moss had been removed,i instantly blamed the cats in the house as they have a habit of digging in the garden.
Over the next few weeks I have noticed this happening regularly, but have decided its not the cats, there isn't enough damage to the moss etc.
I am going to repot the tree soon anyway,so I decided to take a much closer look,as I feared a pest of some sort may be burrowing into the soil.
I checked all over the tree and needles, nothing so I peeled back the layer of moss around the tree to check for pests and found nothing at all.
Now I am really baffled !!!
Seeing as I intend to repot very soon,i decided to take the tree out of the pot to inspect beneath the surface,i search all around the roots and saw a few little white specs that just turned out to be part of the soil mix.
I was just about to place the tree back in the pot, stood it back upright, and there was the culprit hanging out of the soil at the corner of the pot.An earthworm!!!!!
Well that explained the small piles of 'soil' I had been finding every few days lol.
I know earthworms are beneficial out in the garden to areate the soil, and so help the roots of plants to grow.
But should I be worried about this guest in my bonsai pot ??

I personally leave them alone. They eat organics and poop fertiliser. afaik the do not harm your tree

your tree is sitting on a gold mine Wink
(just google "worm castings" )

and now this makes me wonder:

does anyone intentionally add live worms to their pots ???
(and by that i mean training pots)

The only posssible problem they cause is long term. Their "poop" is very fine grain and can/might clog the spaces between soil grains. One worm is unlikely to be a problem and if you are going to repot, just dump it in the garden where it can do more good.

thanks jim !

i would almost think that the air spaces they introduce via locomotion would maybe negate the "shitzinairspaces" effect.

now - next question...
if there is only one in a pot, do they get lonely ? Razz

Interesting thread. Recently, while watering my trees, was daydreaming in miniature as I stared at the rocks, moss, and trunk in the pot. Suddenly this earthworm came boiling out from under one edge of some of the moss. Since I was 'in miniature', it felt like I was part of a movie, Dune or Tremors. Half expected the mudman in the next pot to run away, screaming. affraid

This is a good thread. I wish I had some earthworms living amongst some of my trees.

Sit the pot on the damp ground for a few nights and your wish is likely to come true.

Just read something recently that if we weighed all the earthworms in America, the number would be 55x the weight of all the people in America. Big part of the ecosystem. What would that number be if we didn't use pesticides?
