hard pruning in zone 6/7 now?

Post  bucknbonsai on Wed Feb 09, 2011 10:50 am

Does anyone have any opinion on hard pruning right now in zone 6/7. Im talking about trunk chops and chopping back sacrifice branches. No buds are swelling yet but do they have to do that before I cut back hard now? Does this timing matter whether it is evergreens or deciduous?
thanks

I'd wait. You're colder than I am, and we're still expecting temperatures well below freezing over the next two or three weeks.

It's trite, I know, but it IS better safe than sorry. It's not as if you want to gamble on producing a food crop and getting it to market before anyone else. Your bonsai are as choppable in early March as they are in February.

I am in Zone 9, I wouldn't prune until early/mid March.
