I have found Cryptomeria a more challenging subject to grow well than most. Particularly if you want to emulate the style that they are traditionally grown in, with dense upturned pads. They tend to abort branches unpredictably and require good feeding and constant attention to pinching back in order to ramify.

They do thicken really well if you can sort out the roots and plant on a slab in a garden bed. Trunk thickening is much more rapid and chops are necessary to create taper. They are one conifer that does sprout new growth from old wood. A long term project.

Thanks kev I believe these to be 10 yrs old.
So to start training branches would I just start to pinch out the tips and
Are they suited to the formal style ?

Yes and yes. They are often grown as formal upright. You could achieve that thickness with denser growth, in three years in the ground though!

Yes and grow lots of low sacrifice branches. Keep some shorter or develop new ones later.
