Monster carpinus

My friend Mario with a new catch...nice monstrous carpinus orientalis.
This one was not so easy to collect...auch
but now...the beast is tamed

How long it took till he was willing to let loose of its birth ground? (The tree of course)
What a strong nerbari shows this tree.
Please post us some pictures when it is potted.

After two hours the tree surrendered.That was one bloody dig. There will be more photos and a video from this trip

I wonderd about that but from sitting here in Australia I have heard there is plenty for us as well if only we where alowed to bring some in to the country

We have this new massive arboretum being created in our Capital Canberra called 100 forests and Carpinus Orientalis is one of the 100. I get the feeling they expect them to grow upright but have not been able to get any information such as why they are included in what is meant to be a collection of endangered or important trees and I don't even know if we have even one tree in this country?.
I did manage to get the contact for the seeds they are using and now have a crop of Carpinus Orientalis seedlings. I am looking forward to planting them out in the future as they are said to handle the hot dry summers better than other Hornbeams.

Not that I expect to get trunks like you are collecting in my life time but how old do you reckon these ones you are collecting Guys. It may have been mentioned before but I can't remember.

Oh one of you guys over there sent me some seeds and I keep saying thanks hoping the person hears as I lost who it was I managed to get two trees to germinate and the seeds they sent where much different than the other ones I got so I consider that I have two different varieties of Carpinus Orientalis if that is possible The ones from the seed seller the same as the arboretum used where at least three times bigger and pronounced ribs in them.
I got about two dozen germinate from about 5-700 seeds. I passed of about 100 to a bonsai nurseryman and last I heard he had no germination so I did something right

in better soil and more humid environment these trees can grow upright and have somewhat bigger leaves, usually they can grow to 5-6 meter tall trees.
carpinus orientalis can stand dry summers just perfectly, and certainly much better then othes carpinus species and, probably better then many many other species of broadleaves trees if not the best.
these trees we are collecting are probably from 30, 50...up to 70 or 80 years old...I am not sure if the oldest is the biggest because, these trees grow very slowly in these area with small amount of rain and scorching sun all summer. but I do not know if this can be one hundred years old, I doubt

I am glad that you managed to germinate a few of these...maybe that is the beginning of carpinus orientalis conquering australia ...are you sure what you've done

there is probably twisted trunks with more movement out there...but...trees that you can see on my photos and videos, also on my blog or sandevbonsaispace page are typical finds for that area, so it is realistic to expect something like that.
do you think that these trees should have more movement...because I believe that they are twisted quite enough ....some branches have straight parts which are usualy cut in establishing basis for future design...that is something that cannot be missed.

but it depend only what the bonsaika like to work
some trees inspire the creativity of somme people and others not


and the fact is... i like strange trees...close to sculpture
however you seem to like trees with strong natural evocation
and yours are like this ....a natural evocation well done and well controled
i read all your blog an i like your work very much...really
but we ve only got some differents ways to express our trees

some of my works make me search for trees twisted or very damaged by nature
that why i ask you if you saw some of them in your place
above all if you don t like them and don t collect them

Thanks for the added Info Sebastijan. I can't wait to get these guys in the ground and see how they go. I am glad I get to thank your wife for the seeds it was very kind and it will be great if we get some trunks of this species to work with in the future.
A hornbeam that takes hot sun better than most broad leaf sounds too good to be true plus such a great tree for bonsai. My dreams come true.
Oh I have not seen any Autumn colour with them yet. Do they get the nice Red such as Coreana and others. Surely that is too much to ask for.
