White Birch Empty White Birch

I am interested in trying to locate and hopefully procure a white birch composition, preferably clump style...I can't spend a king's ransom, but on the other hand would like material that has been in training for awhile and that shows the beautiful white bark if possible. Thanks in advance for your input.

Regards,
Tom

Unfortunately, most American white birch species don't live long enough to be worth the trouble of making into a bonsai. Walter Pall claims that Betula pendula has a better record, but you will probably have to start one from scratch. Don't look at me; mine died.
Good luck in your search.

Thanks for your input, Iris...I am sorry that your attempt was unsuccessful regarding the species.

Betula pendula also has an unfortunate habit of shedding branches unpredictably. This makes it a tricky bonsai candidate, but lovely when done well. I too have lost trees that were many years old, both from seed and collected. Surprising really, as they are a pioneer species that colonises waste ground and stony places with ease.

I read somewhere that birches can live for 50 or more years before they start to decline, perhaps longer with good care. I have been growing a couple of of white birches for the past two years. They are tolerant of the Piedmont Virginia climate. The only problem I see with them is that they are "aphid magnets". I will be putting a two tree grouping together this Spring and will post a picture when they're planted.
Best, Todd
