Hi John,

I’d be tempted to have them “opened out” as per your 1st set of pictures. I looks like the live vein has split into 2 anyway and seems happy enough. The split and hollow image reminds me of one of Stone Monkey’s favourite trees that we often pass on the M25.

Below is my similar “stump” to give you an idea of what can be achieved in a short timescale.

Honeysuckle Lor_pr10

You can go quite radical with the thinning but be careful when wiring. Anything up to pencil thickness can be gently bent or pulled into position (I’ve found tension wires work best) but for major direction change find a thin sub-branch and grow on. Feed this tree like crazy (Green Dream seems to work wonders) but you will have to keep on top of the pruning. I had to cut back this tree about 3 or 4 times last year even after it’s radical 1st haircut!!

Have fun and keep us posted,

Hi John , I found this tree in a shrub bed of an old Victorion Mill and on cutting back one of the main branches counted 36 rings ....John

Hi John,

Great tree. I like both the trunks and the patterns that nature has carved on them over the last 36 years. Regarding working on the tree, well the live part is almost done except for some thinning of the foliage and minor wiring.

However I visualise that the major work that needs to be done, is on both the trunks. To be precise on carving jins out of the ends of both the stumps. This can be quiet tricky so do go about the same with a lot of care. If you are not confident, ask someone who is good at carving to do it for you. I am sure you can get a very convincing end result if the Jin bit is handled properly.

All the best.

Definitely the combined twin trunk for me. separated, it will lost its character.
plus you'll have problem with inverse taper and nebari if they got separated.

John.
I never seen them so big.
Indeed i would leave them together and see where you get.
Is it a special sort of lonicera nitida you got over there? (UK?)
