New Azalea Empty New Azalea

Post  landerloos Tue Apr 13, 2010 7:44 am

Here is my new Azalea, not that new bought it many years ago as a potensai, but went in to the garden.
Last week I dug it up again, its a garden variety with yellow flowers.
And no the big long branch can not be bend (I think)
What do you think of the tree, okay or.... and why.
Ideas most welcome.

Peter

Why that big stub left on the tree?

Looks like the tree itself is a winner.

I like the tree Peter, It has some good movement. I think it might look better as a cascade and in a slightly larger and deeper pot.

I let the stump be for a couple of months, the tree can prepare it self and make new sapflows before removing.
This should be quiet important with azaleas but also other trees, I did learn this of sensei Tsukada.

Hi Peter
When I looked at your Azalea early this moring I also thought like the others that this is going to be a real stunner in a short period of time.

Like Will, I think it should be a cascade, but I dont think it needs to be a full cascade, perhaps a semi cascade and not necessarily a really deep pot.
I look forward to its progression
Regards
Steve

I was thinking the same thing but, leaving the branches long like they are allows for more flowers. Nice little Azalea:)

No way Wink , the tree is special because of the long branch, if I remove it the tree wil look like a "knotwilg" dont know the english word for it its a willow that was cut down often for stakes.

I might take it to burrs in November.

I agree with Peter on it being the long branch that gives the tree its character.

For the purpose of the debate, if you did remove a section of this branch as in Irene's virt, I think you'd have to make a similar reduction on the other side - leaving only a jin perhaps.

But as I said, I like the long branch so would settle for keeping it and just doing a tidy up and a small bit of shortening on the left side as we look at it.

G'day Friends...

I too, like the longbranch (wasn't that the name of a famous saloon in the "old west"?)...it gives this Azalea a strong statement of character.

However, I also like Irene's suggestion.

Lest we forget, we're looking at a one dimensional photo...who knows what we might see...up close and personal?

New Azalea Empty Update

Post  landerloos Wed Nov 17, 2010 8:51 pm

Well the azalea went to Burrs in my handlugage, almost everybody fell in love with this litlle tree.
I also took a olive tree (shohin) with me and that one did not nearly get the same amount of wooow of the workshop visitors.
We did not cut the tree, with my short talk about this tree with Mario Komsta he told me to wait until spring, however it did get some new shoes.
Shoe made by my good friend the stone monkey.
Pavel who is on the IBC aswell, came over to have a talk aswell, he said old tree, very good.
What do you think now Will?

Hi! Mr. Landerloos!

What's the plan,...if i may ask.
New shoes ok....what is next?

I see potential,....the owner knows more?
Spit it out,....pleaze....

Or at least some story,....true bonsai make it on stories!

I know it has hard and difficult wood to bend,...and a skin like the one of the most prettiest girl.
Are you going to bend it an how, as fragile as it is?

grtzz m...who likes to thank same owe Pavel for draging in a bonsai at night!

The plan is simple, the long cascading branch will be thined out a lot, the left small branch you see will be the new top and will get some extra feeds for more rapid growth.
Like it is now the cascading branch is to powerfull and therefore hase to be thinned out.
It will not be bend, its a no go, it will snap!
I can not make virtuals otherwise I would show you what it would look like in the future.

What you wright about Pavel, I do not quiet understand, can you tell me in dutch???

Hope this answer makes sense to you and others.

Pavel, that's pretty.

Peter, do you know the name of this variety? It doesn't look like the azaleas I know, but rather a dwarf rhododendron variety. Also, I've seen that flower color in rhododendrons, but not azaleas. The foliage looks more rhodie to me too. I think you have a great tree there!

Yes its Rhododendron, satsuki is also Rhododendron.
Real Azaleas are leafdropping plants.
No I dont know the variatie.

I do now its very slow growing, and usualy its a garden plant.

Peter

Pavel nice virtuals, like it a lot, dont know if I can bend the cascade branch like that.

Yes, I'm well aware that satsuki azaleas are "rhododendrons", Rhododendron indicum. All azaleas are rhododendrons, but not all rhododendrons are azaleas! Real Azaleas are leafdropping plants? That's completely false to say that only deciduous members of the Rhododendron family are azaleas.

Good luck with your "whatever-it-is".

Nice start. thumbs up
I think it needs some wiring.
All the branches (except for the primary) are vertical, and leaves the trunk very bare and exposed.
This just doesn't look natural to me. Wiring some of the vertical branches down and giving the full three-dimensional treatment will improve the bonsai right away.

A lott of people at Burrs asked me if it had bleu/purple flowers, well here is a close up of the flower.
Its a picture of fading times, we have currently 30cm of snow here on the island of Funen (DK)

Good Morning, Peter!
Will you please be host to a question of mine concerning my own young azalea... Embarassed

Well, considering these two posts

and since I have had this kind of accident with one branch while making some minor wiring, I would like to have your opinions....
I have not seen up to now a bonsai azalea with some kind of shari or jin or any such thing.
Do you think the broken branch can be turned to a jin?
Every aspect wellcome!
