Viriginia Creeper Infant.. Empty Viriginia Creeper Infant..

Post  flytuc Sat Feb 07, 2009 1:10 am

Found this near some shrubery..It has planted in this container for about 8 months now..It just keeps growing longer and longer and leaves are falling off at base and not coming back..I am wondering, could I cut it back still get the trunk to thicken on this.. I ultimately want a big thick, thick trunk on this..Please help with any info on this..I have seen only one before at a bonsai show that had a 3 inch trunk..Thanks..

Please read the picture posting instructions. It took me three clicks to change what you had already posted. Copy the url, click the img tag button, paste it in and preview, save.

Looks like Boston Ivy or something similar. The way to get it to thicken is put it back in the ground for a few years.

Check out www.bonsai4me.com This site by Harry Harington is very informative. In his shohin gallery, he has a beautiful virginia creeper. However, he notes it had grown in the grown for 30 years before he dug it up. Kev is correct, the best way to get a thick truck is in the grown. If you decide to keep it in the pot, prune it hard. Keep pruning it. It is a vine and the only way to get it full is to prune it. Good luck.
