Greenhouses
Hello everyone,
Hope your holiday season went well. I wanted to post here to get a little advice about greenhouses. I've been thinking of getting an unheated greenhouse for my trees in the winter. I Live in a pretty temperate area but it can get below freezing in Jan/Feb and does get too warm in a closed greenhouse.
Does anyone have any advice about wood frame/metal frame/polycarbonate or other material greenhouses. I think that I'd like one that automatically opens or vents based on temp and that I can add on to as time passes.
Does anyone have any advice/suggestions?
Thanks again for your help!

Re: Greenhouses
I have a kit greenhouse by Turner Greenhouses out of South Carolina. It can be ordered with fans and vents that are controlled by a thermostat.
Mine is 20+ years old and needs replacement, hopefully this spring/summer.

It depends. Budget, location and size have to be considered. Aluminium frames are maintenance free but the most expensive. A self build in wood is possible if you have the skills. Horticultural glass is cheapest. Triple wall polycarbonate the most expensive.

And I wonder if merely "below freezing" even calls for a greenhouse -- unless you have a lot of tropicals, in which case the heat shouldn't be a problem.

Gax, to answer your PM.
Greenhouses do need careful monitoring to work well. As they warm up rapidly once the sun is shining, ventilation is crucial. I added hydraulic vent openers to mine and they did a fine job, but only lasted a few years. If you get some, make sure that you obtain ones that are rated for the weight of vent they are opening.
