Hi from an old lurker but new poster ;-) from Vancouver, Canada.

Please have a look at my new arrangement. Comments are welcome as usually.

Trying to tune in on why these bother me. I think the problem is the tree doesn't go with the driftwood doesn't go with the pot. To me, it doesn't represent a unified artistic whole. It is a houseplant stuck in a piece of driftwood. Nothing wrong with that, but is it bonsai?

Thank you for your comments, Iris. It is only an arrangement ... far to be a bonsai - that's the reason I've posted here and not in the bonsai section.
Please let me know what kind of pot you think would be more suitable. Planted in an ordinary pot in an ordinary manner ... would be too common, to me at least.

Best regards,

Depends on what you want the viewer to see. There seem to be too many things pulling at the eyes here -- funny shaped pot, driftwood, and stiff, somewhat out of place, plant. I think a simpler, less obtrusive (shape and color) pot would have helped immensely.

Sorry, this was in the Portal & I didn't realize it wasn't intended as a bonsai. I would also not consider it an accent plant, except for a very large tropical bonsai, like a three-foot Ficus. I have a variegated Schefflera. To me it is a houseplant. Period. I would pot it in a decorative tropical looking houseplant pot.
As for planting something in driftwood, don't forget to treat the driftwood to prevent rotting. Driftwood evokes the desert or harsh wilderness. It goes with a cactus or scrubby looking succulent.
You want a kusamono? How about this? A piece of treated driftwood, a similar pot to what you have, but it has to be deeper, and a small collection of Mesembryanthemaceae, such as Lithops. It could be accompanied by a deserty looking suiseki or a similar single accent plant. But please don't mix New World & Old World succulents. I'm an unregenerate purist.
