I just bought this, although I have admired it for years. The person I bought it from grows it in a cold greenhouse. It is listed for Zones 9-10 (light frost). Any suggestions on how to grow it in a pot, kind of soil, etc? Can I winter it in the sunporch, which is kept above 25 (about -4 C)? All I got from the Internet was keep it on the dry side in the winter & give it full sun.

When I bought these some four years ago, I was given some advice - "it is a bulbous plant, so keep it dry and protect in winter." The plants didn´t work well and last year all of them died. Then in sommer I went to visit one alpine garden and saw one square meter of R. baurii! The man told me - keep´em wet and don´t care with winter!
We have even -30°C in winter here in Czech Republic!
So now who could know the ropes?

I have to buy some again.

That's right, you're in USDA Zone 5, same as I am. It should do fine in the sunporch over the winter. If it does well in an alpine garden, next spring I will repot it in bonsai soil.

I just don´t want to be misunderstood - it was in alpine garden, but it the part, which was not rocky, "mountainlike", maybe more like valley. But I spoke about the construction and structure of the whole site with the owner, so I can say the substrate had to be "alpine" too. He said "keep´em wet". Mine were in bonsai soil, but kept dry. They never suffered from dryness, but maybe didn´t prepare for overwintering well...

I always keep them quiet dry and frostfree over winter, I have several kinds and overwinter all the same way.
They need no light in winter.
