Alex,
I really like this stone. The pattern is extremely accurate and the stone's skin is quite interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Alex: I have a stone which resembles your avatar, although I think it looks more like a duck.
I got it at a stone market in Shanghai a few years ago.

Hi Alex... The stone has a wonderful image & the wood seat (more than the stand under the fitted seat) is perfectly understated. The balance of the image with the stone is great. You don't mention the size; I hope it is at least as large as a woman's clenched fist.
In the recently released Matsuura text, great emphasis is placed on images perceived on stones as not being too clearly discerned. They seem more natural if somewhat vague. This one is near ideal. The crane is certainly in evidence & the mouse you perceive is perhaps more projected than recognizable. It is your creative mind that asks us to consider a mouse rather than the crane's normal diet or the common allusion of a bird or animal holding an auspicious object such as a Lingzi fungus.
Since the mouse is often associated with agriculture (e.g., eating the grain from Daikoku's sack) and the crane is usually associated with shallow water and fish, their pairing is an particularly interesting allusion. It has a sense of play/asobi, which suggest the animals in performance rather than the crane eating prey. It could suggest the fleeting moment when a fisherman thought of planting for food, but not very seriously.
