Hi,

Picked up this one a couple of weeks ago from friends for about $6. The species is Serissa foetida. After wiring it for about half an hour and pruning it mildly... here is how it looks. And yes it is pencil thin and I am ok with it for now. Reminds me of the Acacias of Africa... It does need to fill in a bit which I hope it will this spring. And BTW it is about 6 inches tall.

Comments as always are welcome....

You might put a bit of movement into that lowest branch.

How about this? Simple, adds taper, and if you rotate it, you can even make it into a cascade. Sorry about the bootleg visual.

Oh boy, you have patience Ravi.

Well since you are wiring, how about a less straight trunk.

I am sorry, I can't just send you what I have around the house.

If I get a chance tomorrow, before I go off-line for the week, I will leave a serissa feature, growing them in cocoa moss and nothing else.
More power to you.
Khaimraj

* You may also enjoy the variegated leaf, it is very fast growing.

Hi Ravi. If it is still a pencil thin size trunk, you can bend it easily to give the tree some "fighting chance" in the future. same thing with the very low first branch. or pull the first branch closer to the trunk and work on a possible broom style.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your comments...

Jim... Shall work on the movement in the lowest branch. Do let me know (either as a post or a PM) as to why you are the founder president of the old "I hate Serissa Club". For the record this is my second Serissa. I lost the finicky first one a few years back and yes they don't put on girth at all and the branches and trunk are pretty brittle.

Chris... The styling you have suggested is way too drastic for me.. and if done will make my tree from a pencil thin Shohin to a pencil lead thin shohin Very Happy. Thanks for suggesting nevertheless..

Khaimraj.... I am not too sure about adding movement to the trunk... it is pretty brittle and that scares me... I shall look forward to your pics of Serissa growing in Cocopeat and moss. And BTW my unsuccessful attempt with the Serissa that I mentioned above happened to be a variegated variety and I was told that the variegated species are the finicky ones and hence I picked up this 'regular' one which I was told was more stable. It has not started flowering but I am keeping fingers crossed for now...

Jun... Though the trunk is brittle and I am scared... I shall try and bend the trunk giving it atleast 'some' movement. I am not too sure if this tree would look good as a broom... besides in this size it could look dull...

John.... about the species I am told that in Serissa there are about 4 sub species and this one is the most stable one. Do try this one out incase you have not done so earlier. From my unsuccessful experiences which I have shared above I am sailing in the same boat as you are... Very Happy

Regards

Hi Ravi,
my small trees, I'm trying to develop. With the first tree, I'm trying to combine two trees and hopefully come up with small convincing broom style someday.

the second tree, I'm attempting broom style, but just like your tree the trunk is to straight and I tilted it to the side a bit. specie- chinese hollie

Hi Jun,

Thanks for the post.. Both the trees are good and I am sure will make excellent Shohin over time.

On the second tree I felt that the roots are not pruned enough as they seem to be popping up a little. Was this intentional or is this part of phase 2.

Ahh Jun,

now that's an exemplary shrub!
But I would still be tempted to run all of the energy out of say 6 roots only. Tile it's butt!!
Well done !!!

AND I am happy to look at it in your collection - Laughing
