Twister pine

Last week I had the time to work on a nice Pinus sylvestris. Unfortunately I have forgotten to take some more pictures of the raw material before I started. So these are the only photos I have until now. What appeals me the most in this tree, is its trunk with a nice twisting movement in the trunk, that's why I decided to call this tree “Twister”. These pictures don’t show the rotational movement in the trunk very well, but it is certainly there. After investigating the soil for checking the root base, I was lucky to find a wide nebari with just above it a nice strong twist in the trunk. After some deliberation it was clear I was going to style the tree with this front …





After pruning the branches that I would not use, I started wiring the remaining branches…

After shaping the tree I noticed that there are several possible fronts. The final front is probably somewhere between the pictures I called front and rightside, but for now I have not really made a final choice. If the tree continues to do well, I will repot it next spring. I hope to get some more insight on how the root base looks a little bit deeper, and hopefully the choice of a final front will than be easier. In some places there is still a lot of work for correct placement of the foliage. Here and there I will need some backbudding, and elsewhere it needs to grow a little further. Anyway, for a first design, I am quite pleased with this result. Now this tree will get some well deserved rest, and hopefully it will do well next spring …

A great start Hans and a bright future. I think it might benefit from another years development before potting.
