How do you locate the live veins and separate them from deadwood.

OK, I guess this is something of an art, but if you have a dead branch or Shari/Jin you can trace back from there. If not look for swollen area of bark v. shrunken areas. Of course, it is possible that there is no deadwood.

I find the easiest way to find live veins is with a sharp, pointed knife. By gently pushing the tip into the bark you will be able to tell the difference, as the tip will not go in far with the deadwood. Start to gently cut away the dead bark, while watching for a change in colour. As you get close to the live vein, there is usually a purple edge before the cambium.
