Looks like a nice tree. Did you just repot it? Not a good time for that with a cotoneaster.

Hi John. IMHO-I think the first (right side) branch is way to low and can be removed after the tree is much stronger. your tree got a very good potential. good luck. ThumbsUp

good luck.

ok John. make sure the tree survive the winter first. and don't cut it yet even after winter. you can let it recover first for another year...there is no rush for that branch. anyway you can create the canopy even with the first branch on it...then remove it after.

jun Smile

Oh, nononoonononononononono. Just change the planting angle. Tilt it to the left a bit. That will also make that middle trunk/branch not quite so telephone-poleish. Then, maybe plant the tree a bit more shallow than it is.

Coral Beauty Cotoneaster Nursery stock Empty Possible Virt

Post  Rob Kempinski Tue Nov 02, 2010 6:48 pm

When presented with long straight uninteresting branches think about significantly shortening the tree. For example the trunk base, first right branch and upward growing branch can make a great shohin as shown in the possible virt. These trees respond well to chopping. Then again, I like small trees.

They don't really heal well, so use that as a feature and make the chop scar/uro into part of the design.

Jim,
IMHO- the big trunk on the right seems to grow from the first branch. from my point of view no matter what angle you make, trunk should not grow from a branch.

jun

Once the left branch is cut the remaining heavy branch on the right becomes the trunk. alien Well known bonsai trick.

that trick will work superbly for this one rob, as shown in your design. and again IMHO john should select either one of the two side branch. less is more.
