Earwigs taking over Empty Earwigs taking over

Post  DJSEND Tue Jul 21, 2009 7:52 pm

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if I should be worried about this but recently my banches, pots and trees have become over run by earwigs. So far I havne't seen any visable damage but when i pick up a pot or water i find 20-30 under each pot and a few look like they are burrowing in the soil. Should i be worried about them and if so does anyone have any suggestions as to what i can use to get rid of them?
Thanks,
Jay

The gardeners trick that I have used in the past is to fill a flowerpot with damp straw and leave it upside down near where they congregate. They seek shelter in there and are shaken out over a bin or bonfire.

I don't think that they would do serious damage to a bonsai. They can be a nuisance on soft tissue like flowers and new leaves, I believe.

They eat moist decaying organic material, but aren't above (or below) taking a nibble at a root on occasion. Still, they're a nuisance.

Around here, we will find a few to a dozen small ( 1/2 to 1 inch) centipedes in the dampness under a pot. They are predators, so I'm happy to have them around and merely brush them off the table onto the ground.

Jay,
Here's a link for you.

Soy sauce or worcheshblahblahshire sauce will work. I've tried this once and it worked.

If you use soy sauce, stir fry after marinating until crispy. Good with ranch dressing. Smile

Neil, I'm on a hard-line diet, and right now and what you're suggesting sounds helluva appealing to me!

Back to the serious - I've never tried this on earwigs buts it works on slugs (and doesn't waste valuable beer which is another delicacy favoured by our slimy friends). Also useful is a yeast extract stuff sold over here as Marmite (Vegemite in Aus - dont know if there's a similar elsewhere). The ad for Marmite states that you either love it or hate it. Seems slugs are in the former camp. Might work with earwigs. I usually just put it in a jam jar rather than something as big as the container in the pic.

Ahhh, but slug bait is exactly what that gawdawful Light (or LITE) beer was made for. Especially Coors light. When that's not available Corona (UGH!!!) also is suitable for slimy slugs.
