Hey guys,

I am currently in my 3rd year of studying Geography with Environmental Studies at Southampton Solent University.

For my dissertation project I am proposing the use of a Smartphone application; Epicollect, to map the distribution and spread of Sudden Oak Death.

This Poster/ Brochure explains how Data collection would work

Forum seems to cut front of brochure off, Please click on it to see to see full image, thanks Smile

As some of you may be aware Sudden Oak Death; caused by the pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, is already causing widespread damage to trees within the UK and the situation is bound to get worse.

It would be interesting to know if anyone on here has come across had experiences with the disease and/or information on areas that they work in which are close to areas affected by the disease.

If anyone here has an Android Device/iPhone and spots a suspected case of Sudden Oak Death, It would be greatly appriecated if they could take their time to download the application, answer the short questionnaire along with their GPS location + Photo and then Syncronise their data entry to the main website.

Thanks and again I am very keen to hear of peoples experiences with the disease

Any Questions, Just post here and I'll try reply ASAP or email me Very Happy

Has anyone found or what they think might be Sudden Oak Death on any of their Bonsai trees?

I suppose with a name like suddenoakdeath, you couldn't do your dissitation on anything else. Is there any other way of getting the information to you other than apps?

Will - Have a look at this article. It opened my eyes to this problem, but how to transfer the found location other than using an app I don't know!
I have to admit that I don't have one of these gizzmo's anyway !

Just a reminder from a recent post here by Dr. Nina whose life is spent working on SOD for the USDA in Maryland, USA. She says it's unlikely that you will find SOD in a bonsai \:

Dissertation Project - Do you have a Smartphone? - Help Map Sudden Oak Death in the UK Empty Nina on Thu Sep 23, 2010 7:38 amHello from beautiful Hendersonville! I had lunch with Jim Lewis, which is always a good idea, and which always means good beer.

Asfar as the outbreak in England in Larch is concerned, I don't see achange in the risk to bonsai. The disease has been in Europeannurseries for years, and it caught Europeans by surprise when thedisease suddenly showed up on really tall larch.

In the US,there has been one report on a bonsai, and ironically, it was on amallsai sitting indoors where it was no danger to anyone, and wouldhave dried up and died on its own. I would advise everybody not to moveknown hosts out of an affected region. In the US, that means not takingan oak bonsai (or camellia or manzanita or madrone or buckeye) out ofany of a number of counties in California. Nurseries in those countiesare not allowed to ship out of state without an inspection to show theyare free of the disease, but that certification does not guarantee thatyou won't get a plant with an invisible infection (That's what I study-invisible infections!). So in the US I wouldn't buy those kinds ofplants from certain nurseries. In Europe, the situation is morecomplicated, because the disease is widespread in nurseries, but notwide-spread in nature. That means your bonsai in your backyard inBelgium or Italy is not going to get the disease, but you might buy aninfected lilac or Camellia or Rhododendron from a nursery.

Alietteis NOT effective against P. ramorum. All systemics on the market are"fungistats" which means they only slow growth of the pathogen.

For US people, you can go to the website of the California Oak Mortality Task Force -- http://www.suddenoakdeath.org/-- for a huge amount of good information. For Europe, the DEFRA websiteis outstanding. (Note: I searched the DEFRA website and found no usefulinfo - Jim Lewis; I always could have missed it. www.defra.gov.uk/)

Why, hi there, Sudden! If you want to know the situation in the US, email me at work: nina.shishkoff@ars.usda.gov and I can fill you in. Your project would work pretty well in California, but I'm pretty sure there is already a map like this being assembled by the California Oak Mortality Task Force.
