Hey Tim,

Started testing this a few years ago, and also saw it as a tree the Taiwanese use as well. A bit thorny at first and as the branches age, they become pleasant. Grew up with one in the yard and it's supposed to be at least 50 years old.

I have never seen one with a larger than 12 inches [ 31 cm ] trunk. So when you see my second test subject I will ask, does it make sense to try for a 3 inch [ 8 cm ] trunk at 15 inches.

As you can see, it grows in Hawaii, and can handle a % of cold as well.

Hope the links work.

Young tree, maybe 4 or less old. Started off as a chance seedling in the grow trough.

I didn't want to butt in on the guys showing their maples, but I wanted to show you that it could be done in the Tropics. Warning, I really miss timed everything with this tree this year. Bought in 94 or 96 as a whip [pencil sized trunk.] Trident Maple out of the UK.
