Got this 2 years old JBP from a nursery stock in a 3 gallon pot, the trunk base is about 2 cm in diameter. Transfer it to a training pot 3 month ago. The trunk is rather strait an uninteresting, however the young trunk is still quite limber; Last mont I took this advantage to shape it to mimic the twisted windswept pine.

Hi Kooi.

Will JBP survive well in KL?

I saw some local pines growing in the Genting highland areas...I am not so sure of the cultivar though.

BTW, I'll be at the Malaysian National show in KL on May 29 with Master Robert Steven, Hope to see you there.

regards,
jun Smile

Jun,
Yes I have killed a few JBP, but it mostly due to my ignorant, carelessness or over enthusiasm. At the moment I have 3 JBP which I keep alive for about 2 ½ years.
There pine u see around Genting Highland, Malaysia is a tropical pine by the name of Pinus caribaea, the needle is about 7 cm to 15cm, and they also do well in the low land. Somehow the people in Malaysia never seem try to bonsai them, I have seen them growing well in the 10 gallon pot, I think if pine bonsai technique are apply to them, their needle can be shorten, they can make beautiful pine bonsai of medium or large size. I live in a flat n cannot accommodate medium or large bonsai, I hope you can try on them. I think u have to apply pine bonsai technique on them and do not treated them like angiosperms.

Khaimraj

Thanks for the compliment.

I have not try pinus c yet, bcoz the space in my apartment is limited. Caribbean pine have longer needle so they are not suited to be small size bonsai. Anyway some one here have one, here is the picture.

I am sure one of the pinus c in our local nursery will make a literati bonsai but too I juz got no space for big bonsai.

Kooi,

an idea you may wish to try. On our side, the young seedlings hold onto the juvenile foliage [ 2.5 cm or less ] indefinitely, and if you use wire or look closely for a contorted seedling, you can have a small to miniature Pinus.c. With no space problems.

Look for very young seedlings.
Best to you.
