What Azalea is this ? Empty What Azalea is this ?

This Azalea bonsai has been rewarding with with good blooms over the last few years. This year I counted at least 300 flowers. It is now towards the end of the flowering season. I still don't know what type of azalea this is. So I will be very happy if someone here can help me to identify my azalea bonsai. The flowers are varied.
Thanks and Cheers.

Wow CJ, now that's a flower! To me it looks like one of the "Belgain hybrids" that are grown here as greenhouse/florist potted azaleas rather than strong, hardy landscape azaleas. I'm sure it has a name, maybe you could start there and see if you can find some images that match. How did you come about it?

Thanks Russell. I bought it from one of our Azalea specialist nursery 6 or 7 years ago. They were clearing their 30 years old parent stocks. I went back to them but they have now moved away from azalea and doing more lucrative business selling big trees in huge pots. So they are not sure either.

Were they growing them for potted plants or landscape material? I've never seen anything like that grown by the nurseries here for the landscape trade, but your climate may be milder and allow you to grow azaleas that wouldn't make it here. I do see azaleas sometimes in the floral departments of grocery stores that look like this. I'll pay more attention and see if they maybe have name tags in them.

Russell: They were producing potted plants from these stocks. How these potted plants were used I am not sure. I have not seen this variety anywhere else.
Come on people, show me the way to help me identify this azalea. There must be some azalea experts amongst the people here.
Cheers.

I googled florist azaleas and this looked promising - http://www.fesslernursery.com/wholesale/florist-azaleas/variety-list

Good luck!

Thanks Russell. I had a look at the pix of Aquarell, don't seem to be the one. There are more variations on my tree. Will continue to press on.

Is it really striped/variegated? Since you are close to Japan maybe it's a Japanese belgian indica cultivar.

For the belgians all flowers need to be uniform. The Japanese prefer the opposite as seen in their satsuki.

Hi Glaucus, thanks for your interest. Here are a few more closeup shots of the flowers for u to determine. U may be right that this is a Japanese cultivar as I know this nursery used to bring in Azalea from Japan. I still have not given up yet. Still trying to get the nursery to go back to their records to identify it. They are busy people and this takes time.
Cheers, CJ

I was looking at some new azalea pictures on a florist azalea site and saw some new cultivar and remembered your azalea.

Looks very close to 'Yunnan'.
