Hello everyone, my name's Owen, and one of your members (Rich Lewis) has been living with me for the past few months. He's been teaching me bonsai while he's been over here, and we now have a bit of a collection going.

This is a large Ficus that we picked up from a nursery for $85, and had a rather impressive root base. We're starting it as a banyan and it's repotted in quincan (a coarse, volcanic gravel) and 40% sphagnum mixed into it. We sawed the old pot in half and re-planted it in that. The tree is 20cm around the base and has been placed in shade on the South side of the house. It's the dry tropics over here, so it's generally very hot, and the humidity at this time of the year, is reducing.

Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated - we haven't done too much with it since it was about 7ft tall at the nursery and we've had to take off quite a lot of foliage. Rich thinks we should leave it alone to grow for a couple of seasons before styling it.

Regards,

Owen

ThumbsUp

Last photo is probably going to be the back-we'll see as it develops. We're giving it osmocote pellets (16-2-10) at about half the recommended dose to give it some nutrients.

cheers
