PICTURE OF MY PUNICA YAMADORI SHOHIN.

Post  Hans van Meer. on Mon Sep 06, 2010 11:53 pm

Hi everybody,
today I shot some pictures of my trees and I would love to show you two that I made of my old Punica yamadori Shohin that I have been caring for more than 15 years now. I especial like the mature root bas on this small tree that only measures 21cm/8.4inch. I find the color and texture of this pot from John Pitt stunning! This little tree has given use a lot of pleasure over the years! I hope you enjoy the pictures?

Cheers,
Hans van Meer.

Punica Yamadori Shohin

By yamadori, I presume you dug it out of somebody's yard? It doesn't grow wild in the Netherlands, does it?

No! I wish we had them growing here! Sorry I forgot to mention that it was collected in the south of France.

No Will, I bought it at Burrs two years ago. Together with a other beautiful one! And one from stone monkey as well that I had won at that AoB competition that I won.

Very harmonic and peaceful feeling of this Shohin Hans. I am a bit crazy with the John Pitt pots. I have few of his that I am really pleased with. This one also has this quality of Johns. Good to see some good surface root work. :-)

That´s a beauty, Hans. I have one punica granatum but the nana variety, which is not as beautiful as the "bigger version" and is unfortunately sort of fragile. I wonder if it flowers regularly and gives fruit. Mine does.
Thanks for sharing! Very Happy

New pictures.

Post  Hans van Meer. on Wed Feb 22, 2012 6:28 pm

Hi guy's,
and thanks for the interest! And just at the right time, because I repotted this little tree yesterday, straight back in it's wonderful John Pitt pot! Smile Here are two pictures I made that day.

And a close up of the nebari/root base.

This tree has never had any flowers or fruit. It is a Shohin and keeping it this small to protect the branch structure is making it imposible for the tree to make flowers. Like in other flowering species, like Hawthorn, in the smaller Bonsai regions, as soon as you start to keep the growth of branches to a minimum to save the branch structure, they will stop flowering. And they (as a tree) will not grow much more anyway! In some species, as a small Bonsai, you have to choose between the flowers or a nice branch structure. You cant have both in some case.
Cheers,
Hans van Meer.

Thanks for your reply, Hans. It´s interesting what you say. Indeed, I have often to decide myself between flowers and fruit (if there´s any) or structure.
By the way, this little guy repotted looks great. Keep on taking care of him.

Cherio! Very Happy

That's good to hear John! That means that the illusion works! Very Happy Yes I was quit lucky to find such a small little tree with such a powerful natural root base!

Nice, Rui!
Why don't you start your own thread?
I think your punica deserves a thread of it's own! Doesn't it? Very Happy
