Hi John, great color to the "fringes". I have tried to grow these twice, and lost them to the Winter. I had them buried in mulch, in their pots, with my other stock but they did not like this treatment in Zone 7. I recommend, since you are in Zone 6, a cold green house, at the very least good frost protection. Or, plant it in the ground. Good luck! Salut, Todd

Interesting trunk. Where it forks, I would remove the right fork. Farther up, where it forks again, I would cut the right fork, but leave a stub to encourage a smaller branch at that point.

I was about to suggest that it be chopped a couple of inches above the fork as it seems a bit tall for the trunk.

But Iris' suggestion would work, too.

Probably doesn't matter, but heavy pruning in spring causes some trees to bleed a lot of sap.
Are you sure of the identity? Picture doesn't match Chionanthus virginica, the native fringe tree.

The common name I've seen for Lorapetalum is usually "fringe flower", but I've also seen it called "fringe tree" occasionally. That's the trouble with common names.

Mrs Iris,,i looked at the tree this morning,,you suggestion is to remove the right fork then the upper right fork.. the left side of the tree leans to the back and the root system is not that good if i use the back side for a front.. the trunk would have to be wired to bring it fowared,it is stiff as small as it is..I can do that but there will not be much left..what do you think???? thanks john

The correct spelling is Loropetalum chinense.
Cut off half that right branch now & the rest next year. Don't worry about which way it's leaning. If you can't put it in the ground, put it in a giant training pot with coarse soil.
