In the garden of the block of flats that I live there is a big acacia farnesiana which is a very beautiful tree and when in bloom it gives off an exceptional scent.
I have tried once to germinate the acacia seeds (following some instructions found through the internet) but I have had no success.

Well, yesterday I found out that in the adjacent ground there have grown two little acacias almost under the rear wheels of an immobilized (out of order) old car. I presume that this is the second year of life for these little plants.
So, this is my chance to have my own acacias for making a shohin bonsai out of them (if I ever manage...)
I digged around them and gave them ample water. Made some trimming of the long brances and I will feed them during the next days.

I hope I will dig them up and replant them in the ground using the method of the flat board (or anything similar) underneath the rootball. Is it safe to do this during this coming fall? Or should I wait till next spring?

Another question concerns their thorns.
What do you think about that? Could I remove/cut the thorns? Or this will harm the tree?

Thank you!

I always remove thorns from trees that have them.

I don't have an Acacia.

When you dig depends upon your climate.

Why not do one in fall and one in spring.

Alexandra,

Acasia farnesiana makes very beautiful bonsai. For reference, see some of the topics in the bonsai forum concerning exhibits in Indonesia, where it is commonly known as Arabica. It will say it is safe to remove the trees in the suggested date. I must tell you, they develop a killer tap root, even as young trees.

Removal of throns will not be a problem.

Kind regards,

Jose Luis
