For now, I'd plant it in the ground. You can cut it back and use the branches as cuttings material -- but only if you think you have time to get them to root. Otherwise take the cuttings next spring, and pot it up in something at that time.
They do suffer fairly severe root work, but I'd still start off with a largish pot.
Pics from several sides will be examined carefully.

Crape Myrtle Tree
'Pocomoke' is not plain Lagerstroemia indica. I have its more miniature sibling 'Chickasaw.' I'm a big expert on how to kill them.
These are miniature hybrids of L. indica x subcostata var. fauriei, developed over several generations by the US National Arboretum and registered in 1997-99. They are more suited for small bonsai than the standard varieties. Not only do they have smaller leaves, but they bloom on shorter branches. They grow very slowly.
However, there are drawbacks. They are listed for Zone 6 IN THE GROUND, but as container plants they are susceptible to winter dieback. They must be wintered over very carefully. Also, prune the roots very sparingly when you repot. Repot in the spring when the buds swell. The roots must be reduced gradually. If you Google on Pocomoke crape myrtle you will get lots of hits. I believe there is some background information on the National Arboretum web site.

Re: crape myrtle tree
pocomoke, im told is more cold hardy than , chiksaw
I have a few chicksaw found some others at local nursery, but i'm considering the very slow growth rate of the dwarfs/minatures (5 feet or less) as opposed to mid sized varieties (<=12 feet)
for shonin the dwarfs are fine, but take forever to put on any caliper for anything larger, with mid sized crepe's they grow faster and leaves reduce to appropriate proportion
any experience with larger crepes like victor, or prairie lace as opposed to popular dwarfs chicksaw, pocomoke

Re: crape myrtle tree
If you have a decent nursery near you it is possible to find even dwarf crape myrtle with decent trunks and taper. This is "Cherry Dazzle." I bought it as a 2-foot plant last fall, and have been paring away at it ever sine. It stands 10 inches from the over-large pot now, and probably will be a couple of inches shorter when I'm "done."
