I was wondering if anyone had any success with air/ground layering virginia pine. I have seen the black pine technique of ring-barking a large root before collecting and I was thinking it might increase success on a P.v. I have been ogling.

I have not personally done it.

In theory, the info I have seen says P. virginiana will back bud easily. Pines that back bud easily, as a generalization, will also air layer successfully. It is certainly worth a try, and you should use the techniques recommended for JBP.

When a friend of mine unsuccessfully airlayered a JBP, it was suggested to him that he graft roots at the location he was trying to airlayer. I'm not sure if he attempted that as he's since moved.
