Nyssa sylvatica bonsai?
Hi All,
Has anyone, had experience using Nyssa sylvatica for bonsai?
I am currently (well for the last umpteen years) going to college for a Hort degree.
My instructor has offered me the chance to grub up a Black gum, its a 7' tree that
Ill need to drastic prune down to a reasonable size.
My question is will/do Blk Gum take well to a drastic prune? and How are they to back-budding?
Thanks for all,
Sincerely,
Zone 5

It had better be a Large bonsai. I've never gotten the leaves to reduce by much. I have to admit that I didn't try too long, though.

Thanks Jim,
Its a freebie,, she was going to just dig it up and toss it (perhaps not growing to her likes),
so she offered and I accepted. I was curious about the back budding after a drastic prune.
Thanks again,
KJ

Hi Kj
Nyssa make excellent bonsai. However I agree that it is difficult o achieve leaf reduction, thus larger sizes are preferable.
Even here in Oz they give wonderful autumn (fall) color.

Hi all,
I have got smaller leaf by reducing the nitrogen to enough to keep it green and leaf reduction seem to work......... but as they say never look a gift horse in the mouth, as a freebie would have a go.

Re: Nyssa sylvatica bonsai?
Well Jim L and James and all,,
I dug it up,,,(send the Pict. this weekend, after the rain), I stumped it off, and pruned any ragged and/or
troublesome roots. The end result is a tree with a 2-3" caliper, and an overall height of 27" a little over 2 feet.
I found a sucker that Ill use to nurture the tree for the next few years, until a fine root system can be attained.
Then Ill start to use your advice (all who gave), and go for a Large Bonsai, prob on the limits of Bonsai Sizing.
I know my college teacher will go Ape SH*T when I send her the pict of the tree the way it is now. She loves
all that is green ( she should she's a HORT Professor). But I think she shies away from me and my "BONSAI ADDICTION" LOL!
I have referenced the DIRR Bible (as I always do) and did the Math. A larger Bonsai is what Ill have to go for.
Thanks alot for the advice,,, Ill be looking for more as the years go by..

Nyssa sylvatica Bonsai
Don't worry, your English is better than my French. Why would you want to prune the roots every year? Every other year would probably be enough.

Hi Iris,
Thanks for my english. Do you have a nyssa in your collection? It's very hard to get information of this species in France, nobody knows this tree.
I have to prune the roots because my tree is not already a bonsai. It's still in a large pot. I will repot it next spring and, of course, I will prune the roots.
I don't know this species: Will it endure a huge reduction of its roots? Do I have to cut progressively 1/3 each year?
Jerome.

It is better to be safe than sorry. Bonsai is a game of patience. It is much better to cut 1/3 off over several years and work on the top in the meantime.

Hi everyone and thank you Jim.
Cutting 1/3 off is what I wanted to do. I can be very patient when a tree looks, for me, amazing...
