Trident Maple dig

Hi All
this is a trident maple bonsai the i wasn't happy with .About 5 years ago i decided to put it in the ground and
just dug it up it has a nice fat base ...but what to do with the handel bars

Hi, cut them off all right! You have nice movemnet in the middle stem, taper is not too bad either.

just worried about two big scars on both sides ...maby cut one off ??

Hello Roboku. If your worried about scars, cut them off and put it back in the ground. They will heal very quickly in the ground, you'll be looking at them for years in a pot. Just make sure the wound is concave for smoother callousing.

I would follow Will's suggestion of putting the tree back in the ground, but I would only cut the right branch and shorten both the left branch and the central branch - new branches will sprout around the cut areas, and these new branches will take some time to thicken, a time during which the stubs of the left and central branches will not thicken significantly (not as much as if you leave them as long as they are now anyway!). By the time the wound left by the removal of the right branch is healed over, you will have a nicely branched tree with good taper and lots of branches - lots of options for further development of your bonsai.

It looks like a screaming Triffid!

Those branches are MUCH too large to be branches on a bonsai. You have to get rid of them. The remaining branch would be ugly, otherwise. Planting in the ground will speed up healing -- especially if the cuts are slightly concave.

I second Will and Jim. Cut them both off flush and then hollow the cuts very slightly just a mm or 2. Don't worry about the scars, Trident is a relatively thin barked tree but it is remarkably good in closing wounds quickly, if allowed to grow wild and free. It is about the only tree where I would definitely use a wound sealant to prevent any dieback around the edge of cuts.

I would cut the ones on the side.

On the second tree,You might get away with the lower left branch as a first branch but the thickness will make it difficult to bend in to position the one on the right needs to be removed and healed over .On the first tree I am in agreeance with the rest cut both off put cut paste on it and put back in the ground or in a large cement mixing tub It will not heal as fast but can be done while forming the fibrous roots at the same time.

I would do exactly the same with the second one as recomended for the first. Tridents bud profusely on old wood.

tridents heal quickly, especially in the ground.

I can't recall where on the planet you are but in the northern hemisphere this seems late for lifting from the ground.

With the second tree there is a branch on the left up top and looks like a back branch there also..what about a V CUT there using that left branch as the apex???? i can,t see the top of the first tree john
