"S" styled chinese elm used for penjing

finish product.-- i want to create scene of a tree thriving at a base of a cliff...hope i got it right. if not at least i made some use out of this almost useless elm. any comment is welcome.

Let the comments to the experts! I will just say that you really did good use of this indifferent elm!
And then I will thank you for posting because this is exactly what I am about to start with an "S" ch. elm of mine which I intend to style as root over rock...
It is a gift from a friend of mine but since I hate all these curves I decided to put it in a narrow and high pot, a plastic bottle i.e. so that it will hopefully get longer roots to serve my project.
May I ask for any tips you could offer...

It just goes to show you that much as we deride "mallsai" Chinese Elms with their predictable S-bends, they do have a use from time to time. I like your idea, Jun, and it's most certainly a great use of an indifferent tree. If it were mine, I'd have used a shorter tree and put the whole thing in a longer, shallower tray to give the impression of the high mountain and small tree dominating a wide landscape. But that is just nitpicky.

Here is a creation of my own, using similar trees that someone gave me as a birthday gift some years ago.




btw one major plus is that all but one of the trees fell victim to the bad winter we just had, but it was a very inexpensive repair job to get it back looking decent again.

i have some more "S" type chinese elm. its a very cheap "lab material" to experiment with, so the return of investment on this materials are not that bad, at the same time i find it challenging to use this materials as they all seem to be coming from a single mold. i find it challenging to create different styles from almost the same curve and style.


this one is one of the "S" elm im planning to use on a penjing style too, il place this one on top of a rock but on a semi cascade style. i changed the position of this elm in the style above and replanted it first to prepare it for the next stage on top of the rock. this one is ready for the replant the roots and branches have adjusted well for this position.

with your elm, may i suggest that you find first its strong points, roots probably? my elm above has a tapered trunk with branches well spread on top, so i think its good for the syle that i have in mind.
just remember, if you are using a single elm tree, i personally find it wise to eliminate/minimize the "S" shape appearance.





this is from a portion of my "s" chinese elm forest. all elms are positioned side ways, when viewed from the front you wont notice the predictable curve of the elm. try to cheat on the angle, youl notice that you can have some sort of tapered trunk(on some elm , that is).

thanks. i used concrete to fixed the tall rock. the concrete also served as a counter balance for the pot.
