Cascade? Empty Cascade?

Post  Guest Tue Jul 27, 2010 9:51 pm

Way back in February this year Jerry showed a Juniper that he purchased at the Noelanders Trophy in January. I too purchased a Juniper from the same trader, this was NOT a cheap tree but I could see the potential. Boon wanted me to let him style the tree as a demo at the Trophy... BUT I truly believe that first you should never style a newly purchased yamadori, the tree must be happy in your garden before any work commences PLUS as Jerry rightly pointed out the trees needed re-potting to know what was happening with the roots prior to styling.

The first images are the tree as it arrived in my Garden, followed by the newly potted tree, can you spot the difference?

This tree is being prepared for a Demo that will be done at the Best of British Bonsai next year, Enrico Savini and I will be working the tree. Since the tree has been re-potted I believe that the planting angle needs to change (shown below), this can be done in 2012, a year after styling.

I personaly am fond of the new potting angle . I don't fancy the cascade as much as the informal style.

Interesting tree, but if it was mine to work on, I would have NO idea where to go from here.

Storm,

The tree is going to be styled be me and Enrico at The Best of British event next year in Birmingham, this is a great show at a great venue, more details will be announced over the next few months but it is definitely a show you should try and get to... Find a cheap flight and I am sure a Birmingham IBC member will put you up!

Beautiful tree , nice deadwood and movement of the trunk.

can't wait to see the result next year.

What are your and Enrico's idea about the design of the tree and about the thick right branch?
try to bring the branch more down?

Best regards,
Yannick

Hi Yannick how are you my friend, great to hear from you Very Happy

The thick branch will probably go and be jinned But this is something that we will decide when we are demoing. The tree is being prepared for demo by defining the live vein, cleaning the deadwood, building a strong and abundant amount of foliage to work with and making the tree secure in the pot. The demo styling will be the next natural stage in the development of this tree as a bonsai. Too many demo trees are not prepared well prior to demo, this tree is far to valuable (as a specimen) to screw up.

I'm fine and how are you?

Ok nice can't wait to see the result.

And your right, that's the correct way of working,in my opinion with every tree you have to be carefull for demo.
If it is a less valuable tree or a valuable one, it doens't matter, no tree is worth to die.

Hi John, I purchased the tree with the intention on creating a cascade because like you I think it would make a good dramatic image... Bottom line is that the position of roots did not lend the tree to being a cascade, plus the tree would have been VERY unstable. As with any material the artist wants to bring out the best... wait until the tree is styled...

Here is a 'blank' of the trunk if anyone wishes to create a virtual.

I was really glad to see this about demo trees not being well prepared. I wish more demonstrators cared as much. I've seen some amazing trees done as demo's die because to much was done at one time and then poor after care. This tree is certainly worth the extra time and effort. Hope to see the results of the demo.

The movement of the trunk is presented better in the upright form. The way you have it now seems more natural to me.

Just because you have a bend trunk, it does not make it a cascade.. Wink -dorothy

Upright looks far better to my untrained eyes. The structure of the tree does not seem to lend itself to a cascade form. Dorothy I like you first virt also, although I'm not as much a fan of the pot. Anyway most here know better than I what works, so I will trust that Tony will take this tree's great potenial and turn it into something wonderful.

Todd

P.S. Will I do like your new avatar (very refined and proper), although your two previous spoke pages about your character. They always gave me a chuckle.

Hi Tony, my friend.

Very nice tree. Stand-tree is a better solution. More dynymiky, interesting area, stand out dead wood.ThumbsUp
No strong branch takes an important area, probably would be better to remove. Maybe only when it softens and leaves a thin vein.

I look forward to the result of styling.Very Happy
