Hello gang,

Just though some of you Americans would like to see a native American elm that I think should be used more for bonsai. It's native to the Eastern US East of the Mississippi River.

Randy, I have several elms that I collected from my yard. How would I identify them as American Red Elms, or do I just assume because I live east of the Mississipi and 90 minutes northwest of Paducah? I like the unique multi branching 'trunks' of your tree. It would be nice to see it when it has leafed out completely. Thanks

Hi Carolee,

In our area there are only 2 common elms, Winged (Ulmus alata) and Red (U. rubra). The easiest way to tell is by the branches. Winged Elm, like it's name imply's has wings attached to the 2 or 3 year old branches where the Red Elm is smooth. Just as a side note the Red Elm is also commonly refered to as Slipery Elm which you many know it by. Ah, the problem of to many common names! Thanks for your comments on my tree. It still has 2 or 3 more years of pad devlopment to bring it to a more satisfying looking bonsai though.
