Where to find a bark stripper?

Post  Gideon on Wed Jul 21, 2010 5:47 am

Hi everyone, I've been looking for a bonsai bark stripper (curved blade, strips bark on the pull) for awhile now and can only find it on kaizenbonsai.com. Looked on ebay and amazon and did searches on google. Can anybody give me a link to a site that sells them from the U.S?

Yeah, a good guy to buy from. Bought several pots from him, he ships it fast, and very well packaged. Pots were very nice too.

What on earth is a bark stripper and what can it do that a pliers and a knife can't?

Sounds to me like just another way to pay more than you should for a tool with the word "bonsai" in front of it.

Jim. This tool was originally designed for the removal of Apple Canker. They are very cheap and very good at removing bark SAFELY.

Please feel free to post all stripper pics to me privately for moderation Wink

Here's the Kaizen stripper http://www.kaizenbonsai.com/shop/popup_image.php?pID=1291 (For some weird reason it resizes my browser window.) Basically a curved scraper/chisel.

At the risk of making this thread less "exciting", here is some helpful info. Smile

Flexcut makes several woodworking tools including this Mini Draw Knife. I think you'll find it fits the bill.

I know...

This just might leave someone with the mistaken conclusion that I can be serious for more than 30 seconds; BUT! ... Here is a tool I use for lots of stuff, including carving on my trees.

It is a farrier's hoof pick, sold at most farm supply stores that sell horse care products. If you have the right connections, you could even get the main part of the blade curved a bit. The hooked end is used for cleaning out the crevases in and around the bottom of a horse's hoof. It works great digging into areas need to be recessed or hollowed out. They come in both right and left handed versions. The one in the photo is a right handed knife. For use on a horse, the blade is held with the palm up and the blade exiting the hand on the little finger side, cutting is NORMALLY done towards you, but in other uses can be held and used however is necessary. It can be used somewhat like a one-handed draw knife.

And if you happen to know a farrier, he (or, more rarely, she) can make you one from a cast off horseshoe.

I are one! But, I no longer own a forge or anvil. Easier to buy one ready made! (Best farriers are women, theiy tend to fit under the horse better and their smart enough to realize they aren't stronger than the horse so they figure out ways to convince the horse it was all their idea!
