Re: next step advice
Chris,
Is that this one?
As I recall it had a great base. Can you expose more of it and post pics. The way it is now, its tough to tell much due to the foliage. Would be great to see another image in fall after leaf drop.

I had originally thought this main trunk should first be shortened..... and the lower branches (trunks) retained in order to develop a very nice clump. I am happy to see that it looks like you've kept them.
As you can see from this pic, the base is nice and it lends itself well to the clump style, especially with such low branches/sub trunks.

Re: next step advice
Neil is quite right, an Autumn image would be best. Dont forget airlayering options with Elm species. They root very quickly so you dont waste too much time.

MAN, What a trunk you have there!! as far as styleing advice i can not see the branches for the leaves.. when was it collected?? maybe you might shorten the branches some to make it more compact, not sure but you can see all the branches... where did this tree come from are they for sale??? i love the way it looks going to be a really good bonsai..good luck with it..john

Seth,
These winged elms if healthy generally fill the pot with new roots by June/July and are ready to be styled as soon as the leaves drop in autumn. Then cold & wind protection and a winter rest. Its possible to trim many times and wire a tree twice in 12 months if the tree is collected in February/March.
Although some styling can be done relatively quickly, waiting 24 months to repot is a good idea.
Chris' tree was collected with a huge amount of feeder roots.....he got the easy one that day!

Re: next step advice
Thanks all.
I really didn't mean that I was going to begin restyling NOW.
I was simply looking for some input for when that day comes.
I'll post some pictures when the leaves drop off this fall, that makes good sense.

Ok thanks for the clairification Let's wait to see a leafless version of this tree b4 we make any harsh decisions.I would start to look at what you want in an over all design and decide where you want branches and the apex and start marking branches to be removed with a grease pen or correction fluid and wait till fall. You would be suprised how a few months can change your mind about a tree.NeilDellinger wrote:Seth,
